Yesterday, our students experienced history where it happened.
As a reward for their outstanding growth on their third benchmark, students visited the Stax Museum of American Soul Music—but this trip was about far more than celebration. It was the culmination of a powerful unit of study on the Civil Rights Movement and the role music played in shaping it.
Over the past nine weeks, students engaged with a curriculum developed in partnership with the museum’s education director, exploring how the sounds of Memphis and Mississippi helped give voice to a movement, inspire change, and unite communities.
Walking through the very spaces where that history was created, students were able to connect their learning to real places, real people, and real stories. This kind of place-based learning transforms understanding into something lasting.

Friday was a big day for SMS! Joining with SHS to celebrate Disabilities Awareness Week, our students raised over $500 for our community based and medically fragile classrooms across the district! Our SGA did an awesome job running the fundraiser and the event.
